I have been thinking of ways to make research more accessible and more digestible in the past few weeks. One of the things I decided to do about it is to make short(ish) recordings of my work, talking my way through some of the research I’ve done along with some slides. I know it’s not the same as reading an academic article or taking my classes, but I hope that it enlightens people a little on the content. I have done this for my most recent article, and will post all the videos here, as I create and work my way through them. And, you never know, I might even get better at editing. TBH though, that will likely come when I can use AI to edit the videos for me. As ever, any questions about any of the videos below, drop me a line.

Navigating the Cultural Landscape through Publishing Brands: A Theoretical, Gendered Perspective

I’ve been doing some research into gender and brands, and recently focussed that energy on the publishing industry, culminating in an article that will be out with Publishing Research Quarterly soon (I’ll add the DOI when it comes in). This article focusses on the role of gender in society and with brands and how that’s reflected in publishers’ about/about-us pages and their colours and logo designs. It doesn’t focus on the books they publish, their authors, or their genres. It does try to make Butler and associated gender theorists a bit more accessible and tangible in relation to something we all kind of know: that everything is gendered. We use subtle gendering of brands to know which brands are something we can use to align our self-identity and self projection.
